Which under the light is projected in different forms

Giving the body a resemblant luminous weave

In the movement of the shadows, sound and silence

A silhouette expresses in the dance of (dis)affections

Inviting, to feel, those who watch.


 

Transparency, counterpoint, dialogue, equillibrium, form without filling: the emptiness. Elements that become signs for the aesthetic construction. Few elements with great intensity.

The subjective language permits the perception of multiple views. Views that share a concept in common. The Sound of Void – to see to listen and feel.

DESCRIPTION:

The Concert “THE SOUND OF VOID”, about one hour-long, consists of a musical performance, a plastic instalation, a presentation of costumes, lighting, and body movement (dance). The artistic languages in this performance, are complementary and treated as equally important.

 

Music - Interpretation of eleven Brazilian songs from a reduced instrumentation, Double Bass and Vocals. The dialogue between these two instruments happens in the counterpoint of two melodies that describes the musical landscape in the poetry of the songs. Three of the arrangements counts with the participation of other instruments: flute, clarinet, cello, seven-string guitar and pandeiro (Brazillian tambourine). Although these songs show a more dense sound texture, the instruments perform independent lines that preserve the same sound design in this duo, overlapping melodies without the need for constant use of chords.

 

Stage Design - The component parts of the space are mobiles, because of their ability to be malleable. The material chosen was metal, which, despite its solidness, was proved sweeter than a line on paper that once made will not accept adjustments without leaving its trace. In the attempt to withdraw out of the paper the most basic outline of the occupation of space, the curves were conforming. The body was alive, only missing the fruits. These are made of a point of light that moves from side to side of the drawing while the lines and leaves twist. With the intention of inhabiting the still moments that the pauses are created, like vain, waiting moments to what promises to happen.

 

Costumes - The creation and production of the costumes was made from the choice of light fabrics with transparency. They were worked with textures that interweave and support themselves over the body. The palette of colors, taken from the artists skin tones, allows for an integration between fabric and body.

 

Stage Lighting - The almost complete absence of color enhances the scenic area, and allows the sound to fill the environment. The resources light-contour defines the musicians and the basses silhouettes, marking their presence. In some moments the light closed focus allows the eyes to the exclusive meeting with the musicians, extending the surrounding void, which is more deeply traversed by the sound.

 

Dance - “To dance is to forget”, would say the researcher Thereza Rocha. Each movement in the empty space is filled only at the instant when it is held. One glance and the movement has passed, no longer exists. This the body, something that changes all the time and fills the empty spaces with movements and fleeting presence. But how to fill the void with emptyness? In the Lyric “Valsinha” (Chico Buarque and Vinícius de Moraes) the body rediscovers itself. Waltzing together bass, voice and body, looking for each other, drawing and being the empty space.

 

Photography - Visual record of the interweave of the arts. The musicians who play, the fabrics that blend with the bodies and the work, all traversed by the light that is in focus and makes them shine. The photo shows what the light reveals. The transparency of the fabric, the brightness of the wires in a thread. A face that shows what you feel, a body that dances by by feeling.

 

Graphic Design - The graphics developed for the performance reiterates the search for intensity using a few elements and the conscious use of the emptiness as filling. The harmonies are prioritized by contrast – in the typography used,  in the chosen pictures – in the construction of graphic spaces of lightness and strength.
